Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard felt a craving while running the mountain paths around Annecy in 2009. They wanted to design a shoe that would still feel fast and supportive after 100 miles, even on long downhills. With lots of experience from the running shoe industry and ideas from skiing, surfing and cycling, a whole new species of running shoe was created. Due to the high degree of cushioning, the low weight and the pleasing rollover characteristics, the brand quickly became known and sought after by ultra runners in particular.
Numerous athletes such as ‘Speedgoat‘ Karl Meltzer, Jim Walmsley and Sage Canaday carried the running shoes to great successes and out into the world. The award-winning Clifton was one of the first shoes to change the perception of what a running shoe can be. HOKA thus became a household name to a wider audience and road runners around the world. A name, which comes from the Maori language and means as much as ‘flying over the earth‘.
Today HOKA is synonymous with high-quality cushioning. Over the years, the shoes have become lighter, nimbler and more durable. They are now available in many thicknesses and heights, but always with a low Heel to toe drop. This helps maintain a natural running feeling and direct contact between the foot and the ground, even on technically demanding trails.
Meta-Rocker is what HOKA calls the uniquely shaped midsole used in its running shoes. The small difference in height between the cushioning at the forefoot and the heel promotes a natural running form and increases your forward drive. Your foot lies softly bedded deep in the midsole instead of directly above it. Similar to a bucket seat in a racing car, the Active Footframe gives your foot support and guidance without any oppressive or restrictive elements.
Your foot gets additional stability on the inside and at the ball by the firmer J-Frame foam. To ensure you always land comfortably and repel quickly, the innovative Profly Dual-Density midsole features softer heel cushioning and firmer forefoot foam. This forgives mistakes during landing and ensures that your feet land under your body's centre of gravity. Time to fly.
From your fastest stadium lap to your first mountain ultra or your crossing of the Alps: With HOKA's hiking boots, running backpacks and trail and road running shoes you will reach your goals comfortably.
Clifton: The bestseller and pioneer. The perfect combination of low weight and maximum comfort. The legendary shoe is made for everyday use thanks to its lightweight sole material, the proven Meta Rocker and the breathable mesh upper. For interval training on the track, for a relaxed lake round with friends or the long run at the weekend.
The dynamic and light Mach (successor of the Clayton) is as fast as the wind and ready for every race. Thanks to its high responsiveness and breathability, the shoe is very popular with triathletes. Even flatter and lighter than the Mach, the stylish Cavu is ready to take off, while still being fully cushioned. Rincon: That's the name of the new lightweight Hoka Speed Shoe with a reduced profile, which nevertheless shines with soft and balanced padding.
With the casual and moderately padded Elevon you can collect many smooth miles. The neutral fit, in combination with the PROFLY™ midsole, creates an extremely even running feeling with lots of propulsion.
And if you need a bit more stability, you should check out the Gaviota. For maximum cushioning and lightweight support, the Arahi is highly recommended, while the groundbreaking Bondi, HOKA's most heavily padded street shoe, takes you comfortably far.
Named after ‘Speedgoat‘ Karl Meltzer, record holder for the most victories in 100 mile mountain-ultra-races, the Speedgoat Trail shoe is naturally designed for technical terrain. An aggressive sole, a firm foothold and a lot of protection, paired with a wide toe box and the well-known HOKA cushioning help you on smooth trails and rugged paths.
The Challenger guarantees versatility and strong footing, even on wet surfaces. And as a competition shoe for ambitious trail runners, the Torrent manages the balancing act between cushioning and agility. The Mafate Speed masters longer distances in difficult terrain without any problems, while the versatile Stinson is equally at home on trails and on roads during long runs.
And once you‘re back on the ground you can recover in the Recovery Thongs and Sandals from HOKA.
