It costs much more to build an XC wheelset with carbon than with aluminium, but racer feedback tells Mavic the performance doesn’t always live up to the cost.
That is why the developers of Mavic engineered the Crossmax Pro Carbon to be significantly lighter and laterally stiffer than aluminium, but to also have the same impact resistance and, most importantly, enough vertical compliance to achieve the ride quality synonymous with the Crossmax name.
They have pushed their exclusive Finite Element Simulation software to the limit to find a carbon layup that would best balance these attributes. To ensure compatibility with the most common XC tire widths (2.1 to 2.35), they have created a 26mm wide front rim for stable tire sidewalls under hard steering forces, and a 23mm wide rear rim for optimal power and acceleration. It is UST compliant for improved traction, puncture resistance and convenience, and the rim is sealed with specifically designed tape. Asymmetric rims balance the spoke tension, using 24 double-butted steel spokes to achieve that sweet spot between lateral stiffness and vertical compliance.
At only 1510 grams, the Crossmax Pro Carbon wheelset meets the demands of pro racers who have ridden them to World Cup podiums.
On the technical side, the front hub is compatible with 15x100 mm thru axles and 9x100 mm quick release dropouts and the rear hub is suited for 12x142 mm thru axles as well as with 10x135 mm quick release axle dropouts (QR adapters included).
Technologies:
Inside the Crossmax Pro Carbon rear wheel the new freewheel-generation named
Instant Drive 360 will be used - it makes a perfect hub: low weight, minimized friction, quick force-closure, high axle-stiffness and enormously long lifetime. And if maintenance should be necessary, or altering the axle-standard, it is tool-free and easier than ever before.
UST - Universal Standard for Tubeless. Ready to ride tubeless system. The UST concept improves traction, control and comfort whilst reducing inertia and flats.
QRM Auto (Qualité de Roulements Mavic Auto) - Mavic's latest innovation. Those cartridge bearings are of course double sealed with C3 internal clearance. Their preload is automatically adjusted to guarantee a perfect spin with no play on the long run.
