Why should you be forced to choose between aerodynamics and weight, between ride quality and speed? Specialized has used only the most advanced technologies, from the FreeFoil Shape Library to a brand new Rider First Engineered frame, to build a road bike that is totally uncompromising. The days when Specialized had to make compromises between drag & weight are over.

To find tube shapes that provide the fastest frame allowed by UCI rules, Specialized took a page from the Venge development book and used the FreeFoil Shape Library. Armed with a variety of optimized tube shapes, Specialized turned to its in-house wind tunnel to put these shapes into a modular test bike for further testing and validation. The result - no compromises, just pure speed.

While aerodynamics were the main focus during the development of the Tarmac, the weight was the co-pilot on this optimal racing bike journey. In the past, aero bikes were always compromised on weight - the more you reduced drag, the more weight you put up with. The design philosophy of the Tarmac was to keep the weight at or below the UCI weight limit without compromising aerodynamics. And with the help of the FreeFoil Shape Library, tools like isotope FEA analysis and some engineering artistry from the best engineers in the industry, Specialized did just that.

In an effort to create the perfect road bike, Specialized applied the Rider First Engineered philosophy to ensure that the 2021 Tarmac is the most balanced and manageable Tarmac yet, regardless of frame size. With a host of top athletes from three World Tour teams, Specialized made changes to the Tarmac based on their wishes. The ride quality between the front and rear wheels has been balanced so that even the longest days in the saddle are still comfortable - without sacrificing the legendary handling and racing speed of the Tarmac.
