Since 1985 Five Ten has had a lasting influence on the history of climbing. The story of Five Ten began in Yosemite Valley. In the mid-1980s, the climbing grade 5.10 stood for absolute extreme routes with maximum difficulty. Charles Cole, founder of Five Ten and the first ascender of adventurous plate and friction climbs, began developing outdoor footwear after slipping and almost falling on a climbing route. His goal was to develop shoes, with a specially formulated rubber compound, that offers extra grip. The result was the legendary Stealth Rubber.
