A test using the Unior Bike Tools Pinion Tester provides quick and reliable information about the wear condition of the pinions.
Place the chain on the sprocket and insert the lever with the rounded end between two teeth on the upper part of the sprocket. Move the last link of the chain away from the sprocket and press down on the lever with 100 N (10 kg) of force in the direction of the sprocket’s rotation. Then, back the last link toward the sprocket. If this link fits freely onto the sprocket, the sprocket is in good condition and will function properly even with a new chain. However, if the last link gets stuck at the tip of the adjacent tooth or if force must be applied to make it fit onto the sprocket, the sprocket is worn out and must be replaced with a new one. If the chain slips off the sprocket under load, the sprocket is severely worn and must be replaced immediately.
