City Bicycles – Your Alternative to the Car

Large cities are becoming ever more densely built-up and the streets are becoming increasingly crowded with cars. It is therefore no coincidence that more and more people are turning to bicycles as a mobility alternative. Bicycles are also environmentally friendly, healthy and affordable. Whether you're going to work, shopping or for leisure, you can often get to your destination faster and more directly by bike than by car.

In principle, of course, you can ride any bike in the city. Nevertheless, special city bikes make the most sense in many cases. They are perfectly adapted to the requirements of city traffic. Classic City Bikes therefore have a pannier rack and lights. In addition, the riding position on these bikes is particularly relaxed so that you don't work up a sweat too quickly and always have a good overview of the traffic. Another typical feature of many city bikes is their roadworthiness – for example with regard to the pre-installed reflectors on the spokes and pedals. Good brakes, a powerful drive, puncture-proof tires, fenders and a bell are also part of the classic equipment of most models.

The City Bike and Its Varieties

But not all city bikes are the same. As with almost every type of bike, different varieties and sub-categories have emerged over the years. In addition to the classic city bike, we therefore make a special distinction between the organic bike categories: Urban Bike, folding bike and cargo bike. In the following, we explain the differences between the respective bike categories. First of all: at BIKE24 we have models from every category. So you are guaranteed to find the right city bike for your needs.

Classic City Bike

Classic City Bikes are normal city bikes: they are designed for universal use in everyday life and are as comfortable as possible. The riding position on such a bike is therefore predominantly particularly upright. It also has a luggage rack, a light and a bell.

Urban Bike

Very stylish city bikes that place particular emphasis on a modern, integrated design. The difference to the classic city bike is particularly noticeable on electric urban bikes. These are fully integrated so that the drive is barely visible.

Single-speed Bike

These are bicycles that only have one gear. The big advantage: they are particularly low-maintenance, as no gear parts can break. For this reason, single-speed bikes are also very popular with bike couriers. Another variant is the fixed-gear bike, also known as a fixie. This type of bike is basically a road bike, as we know it from track cycling. It also only has one gear and the brakes are only applied via a front wheel brake and by pushing against the "normal" direction of crank rotation.

Cruiser and Retro Bikes

Sitting comfortably and looking good at the same time – cruiser bikes and retro bikes are all about style. They are particularly suitable for shorter distances. They are also the perfect choice for anyone looking for a city bike with that certain something.

Folding Bike

Also known as a folding bike. As the name suggests, folding bikes can be folded up. This makes them particularly easy to transport, which can be a great advantage on the suburban train, for example. Their classic special feature is the particularly small wheels.

Cargo Bike

Also known as a cargo bike. These bikes are specially designed for the sustainable transportation of heavy loads. For this reason, they have a loading area. There are many different versions of cargo bikes. The trike (three-wheeled cargo bike), the Long John (elongated cargo bike with loading box at the front), the baker's or postal bike (with a solid luggage rack at the front and rear) or the backpacker (with a loading area at the rear) are widely used.

SUV Bikes With Electric Motor

These are particularly robust electric bikes. They are designed to be used every day in all weathers. In principle, they combine the best of two worlds: city bikes and trekking bikes. At the same time, they also look very stylish. For this reason, most manufacturers see them as the bicycle equivalent of the SUV in the automobile. Some companies also refer to SUV bikes as crossover bikes.
