Shop bike disc brakes at BIKE24

Long descents, wet asphalt, loose trails, or a heavily loaded e-bike – this is where disc brakes really shine. Beyond sheer stopping power, they deliver consistent control in every riding scenario: predictable, repeatable, and largely unaffected by external conditions. Dirt, water, or heat at the rim have little impact on braking performance. The result is a clearly defined bite point, precise modulation, and noticeably less hand force at the brake levers.

At BIKE24, you’ll find bike disc brakes for every riding style – from lightweight road disc brakes with Flatmount to uncompromising 4-piston brakes for MTB and e-bikes. If you want to upgrade your setup with confidence and control, this is where it starts.

Disc brakes at a glance

All disc brakes are built on the same basic principle, yet they differ significantly in design, lever feel, and how they’re used.

Hydraulic disc brakes

Hydraulic disc brakes transmit braking force from the lever to the caliper using oil or brake fluid. With no cable friction involved, modulation is exceptionally precise and required hand force stays low. These systems are largely sealed, resistant to dirt, and deliver consistent performance over long periods. Today, hydraulic systems are the standard choice for bike disc brakes.

Mechanical disc brakes

Mechanical disc brakes rely on a traditional brake cable. They’re more affordable, mechanically simple, and easy to adjust on the go. While they can’t match hydraulic systems in outright power or modulation, they remain a solid option for everyday riding or for anyone who deliberately prefers simpler technology.

MTB, road, and e-bike disc brakes

Mountain bikes typically use hydraulic Postmount brakes, configured as two or four-piston systems depending on the application. Road and gravel bikes rely on the more compact Flatmount standard, optimized for low weight and strong braking performance. E-bikes place higher demands on braking systems due to increased system weight. Reinforced calipers with more pistons and larger rotors ensure heat stability and consistent deceleration under sustained load.

What to consider before buying a disc brake

Disc brakes aren’t a one-size-fits-all component. Differences in actuation, piston count, and mounting standards have a direct impact on how your bike feels on the road or trail.

  • Hydraulic or mechanical: Hydraulic brakes offer more precise control with less hand force. Mechanical systems stand out for their simplicity and lower price.
  • Mounting standard: Postmount dominates on MTB, trekking, and e-bikes, while Flatmount is standard for road and gravel bikes. Older IS2000 mounts can be used with adapters.
  • Rotor diameter: Larger rotors increase braking power and improve heat dissipation. Sizes of 140–160 mm are often sufficient, while 180–203 mm provide extra reserves for long descents.
  • Hub interface: 6-bolt and Centerlock systems are technically equivalent but must match the hub.
  • Lever compatibility: Flat-bar and drop-bar levers aren’t interchangeable. Brake levers and calipers must match the manufacturer’s system exactly.
  • Brake fluid: Shimano and Magura use mineral oil. SRAM relies on DOT fluid.
