Discover Bike Lubricants at BIKE24

Every moving part on your bike depends on the right lubricant. Even fixed connections benefit from proper treatment, helping prevent corrosion and those all-too-familiar creaks. With regular care, bearings, pivot points, and especially the drivetrain, stay smooth and last far longer. What matters most is using the right bicycle lube in the right place. Chain wax is designed for drivetrains, not headsets. Bearing grease has no place on bolt threads. And carbon assembly paste does the opposite of lubrication, it increases friction, so that carbon components stay securely in position. Each job calls for a purpose-built solution.

At BIKE24, you’ll find everything you need to keep your bike running at its best – from chain oils for dry and wet conditions to pressure-resistant bearing greases, suspension oils, and assembly pastes designed for durable, long-term connections.

Bike Lubricants at a Glance

Not all bike lubricants do the same job. Some are designed to reduce friction and wear, others improve grip or protect against corrosion. Using the wrong product in the wrong place can lead to creaks, premature wear, or, in the worst case, component failure.

Chain Oil & Chain Wax

There are two main options for lubricating your drivetrain, and they differ in both how they’re applied and how they work. Chain oils flow deep into the links and keep the chain running smoothly. They’re available as wet lubes for wet conditions and dry lubes for dry trails. Chain wax, once applied, forms a dry, dirt-repellent protective layer and reduces wear by up to 50 percent. Hot wax requires removing the chain and immersing it, while liquid wax can be applied directly by dripping it on. For e-bikes, special oils with ceramic additives are available to cope with higher torque loads.

 Fork and Shock Oil

Specialized oils are used in your bike’s suspension components to keep forks and shocks working smoothly and responding quickly. Regular oil changes, carried out according to the manufacturer’s specifications, help keep suspension parts moving freely and prevent premature wear to seals and internal components. Different viscosities are used depending on the manufacturer’s requirements and have a direct effect on how your fork or shock responds. In our shop, the viscosity is usually listed directly in the product title, so you can quickly see which oil matches your suspension setup.

Penetrating Oil

A versatile solution for seized parts and corrosion protection. Thanks to their low viscosity, penetrating oils work their way into even the tightest gaps, loosen rust, and displace moisture. These oils are used to free stuck bolts, clean the drivetrain before lubrication, or provide temporary corrosion protection. Important to note: penetrating oil is not a long-term lubricant. After loosening or cleaning a component, the correct lubricant must be applied for its intended use.

Grease

Grease is used wherever rolling bearings operate under high loads. This includes the headset, bottom bracket, pedals, hubs, and freehub bodies. High-quality greases remain stable from minus 30 to plus 120 degrees Celsius, resist water, and handle high pressure. They adhere to bearing surfaces and protect against corrosion. Grease is applied during assembly – re-greasing without disassembling the bearing is not possible.

Assembly Grease

Assembly grease is used to prevent bolts and threads from seizing due to corrosion, especially on aluminum and titanium components. It protects against galvanic corrosion between different metals and makes later disassembly much easier. Apply a thin layer to threads, bolt heads, and clamping surfaces. Assembly grease is not suitable for bearings. For those areas, use proper bearing grease only. It is also essential for pedal and bottom bracket threads if you want to avoid problems removing them in the future.

Anti-Seize Paste

Anti-seize paste is an alternative to assembly grease for applications exposed to extreme loads and high temperatures. It contains metallic particles such as copper, aluminum, or ceramic and prevents components from seizing even at temperatures of up to 1,100 degrees Celsius. It is used on brake caliper bolts, pedal axles, and bottom bracket threads, where high temperatures and mechanical forces are present. Anti-seize paste also protects against contact corrosion between different metals.

Carbon Assembly Paste

Carbon assembly paste is designed specifically for carbon components and works very differently from assembly grease. It contains micro-particles that increase friction instead of lubricating. This allows carbon seatposts, handlebars, and stems to stay securely in place without requiring full tightening torque. It protects sensitive carbon fibers from damage caused by overtightening and reduces the required tightening torque by up to 30 percent. Expert tip: Always use a torque wrench.

What to Look for When Choosing Bike Lubricants

Imagine setting off on a bikepacking trip with fully loaded panniers, then hearing the chain grind after just 80 kilometers of gravel. Choosing the right lubricant affects performance, wear, handling, and, in extreme cases, whether your tour goes to plan at all. These criteria can help you decide:

  • Application: Chain oil for drivetrains, bearing grease for the headset and bottom bracket, assembly grease or anti-seize paste for bolts and clamping areas, and carbon paste exclusively for carbon components.
  • Discipline: E-bikes require lubricants with higher pressure stability due to motor assistance. Road bikes benefit from efficiency-focused waxes for optimal power transfer. MTBs need robust all-weather solutions for changing conditions.
  • Wear protection: Synthetic oils with additives and wax-based products reduce wear significantly more than simple mineral oils. With frequent use, the investment pays off through a longer service life for chains and cassettes.
  • Environmental compatibility: Biodegradable, plant-based oils are easier on nature and groundwater. This is especially relevant for tours in sensitive areas or when working outdoors.
  • Temperature resistance: Bearing greases and assembly pastes should remain stable from minus 30 to plus 120 degrees Celsius. This matters for alpine tours, bikepacking in cold regions, or riding in extreme heat.
