Compared to plastic pads, metal pads have a longer service life, are more fade-resistant, and provide consistent braking performance in both dry and wet conditions. Metal pads may produce noise during braking. Plastic pads are quieter than metal pads but offer lower performance and experience higher wear. The plastic (resin) version is factory-installed by Shimano on the XTR, XT, and LX, among others, while the metal pads are used on the Saint and Hone.
