Wolf Tooth’s oval chainrings are based on the company’s proprietary PowerTrac design, which offers all the benefits of oval chainrings without the unpleasant, uneven pedal stroke. Give it a try and you’ll wonder why you waited so long!
Think of an oval chainring as two chainrings in one. A key advantage of the oval chainring is that its shape changes the gear ratio during two key phases of the pedal stroke by leveraging your body’s natural biomechanics.
Here’s how it works:
Power Zone | The part of the chainring with the larger diameter engages the chain at the optimal point of the downstroke—this is called the “Power Zone.” If you imagine a clock face, the Power Zone would be between 1–5 and 7–11.
Recovery Zone | Conversely, the Recovery Zone—again on the clock face between 11–1 and 5–7—is the weakest part of the pedal stroke, where the oval chainring maximizes your efficiency. A 34-tooth oval chainring behaves like a 36-tooth chainring when you need power, and like a 32-tooth chainring when you’re riding uphill.
