Aerodynamic Optimization

In collaboration with CFD specialist Jens Brix Christensen, many possible cross-sections and designs were evaluated to optimize them within the parameters dictated by ergonomic and structural requirements.

Ergonomic Cross-Section

Since Faserwerk did not want to rely solely on CFD, the Luftschneider was taken to the legendary GST wind tunnel. It confirmed an improvement of 8.8 W at 45 km/h compared to the already sleek ICH stem and a standard handlebar. This corresponds to a time savings of approximately 52 seconds over 40 km. This is comparable to a deep-profile aero wheel versus an aluminum rim.

Short Effective Reach

Your handlebar’s reach tells only half the story. The Luftschneider’s very round transition into the drops places the lever hoods close to the tops, ensuring a short effective range. The larger radius also allows for easier adjustment of the lever position.

Ergonomic and Aerodynamic Width

After consulting with several bike fitting and biomechanics experts, it was agreed that traditional 40–44 cm handlebars are too wide to suit the general population. Did you know that the average shoulder width for women is 35 cm and even for men is only 40 cm? For this reason, the Luftschneider is offered one size smaller than is traditionally customary. As a nice bonus, a reduced handlebar width also means better aerodynamics.

Ergonomic Flare

A 6° flare ensures a relaxed and aerodynamic position, 2 cm narrower than the drops. This also provides full leverage and more freedom in the wrist when you’re in the drops.

Lightweight

Thanks to its efficient shape, the Luftschneider weighs just 315 g. That’s lighter than most aero handlebar-stem sets on the market and weighs about the same as a lightweight round bar combined with a standard stem. This way, you get all the aero benefits without paying for the extra weight.
