Extra insulation, longer-lasting warmth.
Polartec® Alpha® fabric is an excellent heat retainer; it’s also soft, stretchy, and lightweight. A few years ago, Castelli thought this fabric would be ideal for base layers, but it felt rather damp and clammy against the skin. However, when they were looking for extra insulation for gravel rides in sub-freezing temperatures, they tested the Alpha® prototypes as a second layer over a Prosecco base layer—and discovered the best combination for cold-weather rides.
They refined the details and developed this second layer for cold-weather rides. They opted for a half zip to keep the jacket from adding bulk at the bottom and slightly offset the zipper to avoid multiple zippers overlapping at the neck. They’ve ensured a close-fitting cut so you can choose whether to tuck the shirt into your trousers or wear it over them, as we do. They’ve also found that it wears well over a base layer from the Flanders, Bandito, Miracolo, or Seamless lines.
