The BITURBO X 32 SAFEWING perfectly harnesses the advantages of the larger wheel diameter thanks to its special construction. The 32-inch version of the proven BITURBO wheel isn’t just a larger diameter - it’s been fully optimized for the new size. It features a special carbon layup that combines lateral stiffness with comfort. Power is converted into forward momentum without compromise, while road bumps are filtered out. Another particularity is the patented SAFEWING rim design. This ensures perfect tire support and protects the carcass from damage in the event of punctures thanks to its rounded rim flanges. The SAFEWING design allows for riding with lower tire pressure, which increases grip and safety.
Because the BITURBO wheel is not under tension when at rest due to its monocoque construction, the rim area can be built approximately 30 percent lighter than that of spoked wheels - without compromising strength. This guarantees outstanding acceleration. Conventional rims are subjected to enormous spoke tension and must be reinforced accordingly.
The BITURBO X 32 SAFEWING is the result of intensive development work. As early as the summer of 2025, bike ahead composites began to delve deeply into the topic of 32-inch wheels. Initially out of pure curiosity, but after initial tests with a specially built experimental prototype bike, they were ultimately convinced of its potential. The rolling performance and grip were noticeably better than with 29-inch wheels. At least, that was the test riders’ impression. To obtain precise figures on the difference between 29- and 32-inch wheels, they conducted an extensive study in collaboration with the test specialists at Ride Better Bikes. The experimental prototype allowed for a perfect comparison. One identical bike, two wheel sizes. Even the tire model was the same: the Maxxis Aspen 29x2.4 and the Maxxis Aspen 32x2.4 were used.
During the test, acceleration values were measured on a dynamometer, and differences in comfort were determined on a bumpy course using acceleration sensors. The subsequent test on a racecourse divided into segments yielded interesting insights. The poorer acceleration of the 32-inch wheels is nearly offset by their better grip when riding uphill. On downhill trails, the larger wheels proved superior. The hardtail was significantly faster with 32-inch wheels than with the 29-inch setup. It was in a neck-and-neck race with the 29-inch race full-suspension bike, which served as a reference and participated in all tests.
As a manufacturer, bike ahead composites can react quickly to trends. Every step takes place under one roof, from development through 3D printing and prototyping all the way to production. That’s why the BITURBO X 32 SAFEWING was able to reach production readiness in such a short time.
