Thermoplastic polyurethane - the new material for bicycle tubes

The well-known products are being replaced by TPU tubes, because TPU has many advantages over the black rubber tube. But what is TPU anyway? Thermoplastics are plastics that deform when heated and solidify when they cool down. This property makes them ideal for the production of bicycle inner tubes, as they can easily adapt to any tire size and width. In addition, TPU inner tubes can be created. For example, they can be produced in multiple layers, equipped with more or less puncture protection and produced in any color - the TPU tube is an all-round artist.

Are road bike TPU tubes better than classic butyl bike tubes?

Definitely. TPU tubes are significantly lighter than butyl tubes. While a road bike tire made of the well-known material weighs around 120 grams, a comparably wide tube made of TPU weighs between 25 and 40 grams (including valve). Incidentally, even in comparison with a tubeless system in which between 30 and 60 millimeters/gram of sealing milk plus valve are used, the TPU tube performs better in terms of weight. But TPU tubes are not only lighter, they also rub less against the carcass of the road bike tire and therefore have better rolling characteristics - whether on the road or on gravel. The TPU tube has further advantages in terms of puncture resistance, pack size and sustainability.
