What is sodium bicarbonate and what does it do?

Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) increases the body's acid buffer capacity, which plays a crucial role in sports. During intense, anaerobic-lactacid stress—such as sprints, intervals, or steep climbs—the muscles become increasingly acidic and more lactate is produced. This releases H+ ions (protons), which lower the pH value in the muscle and lead to hyperacidity. The result: muscle burning, fatigue, and decreased performance. The targeted intake of sodium bicarbonate before exercise increases the buffering capacity of the blood, stabilizes the pH value, and delays lactate accumulation – which improves performance and recovery.

Application

The recommended total dose is 0.3 g of sodium bicarbonate per kg of body weight. 1 capsule contains 1 g of sodium bicarbonate.

70 kg body weight: 0.3 g/kg x 70 kg = 21 g corresponds to 21 capsules.

Notes on tolerability

• Test the tolerability of the protocol outside of training.
• Use in a competition-simulated situation.
• Alternatively, reduce the total number of capsules by approx. 1/3. The effect will be considerably lower, but tolerance will be better.
• Consuming a small carbohydrate-containing snack significantly improves tolerance.

Do not take at the same time as milk or dairy products. In individual cases, gastrointestinal complaints may occur. Contains 240 mg of sodium per capsule. High salt intake is not suitable for salt-sensitive individuals with high blood pressure, impaired kidney function, asthma, or for pregnant women, nursing mothers, children, and adolescents.
