Shimano Shadow-shifting system - protected shifting

Shimano originally developed this technology for mountain bikes to protect the exposed rear derailleur from contact with Trail obstacles and thus make it more durable. "Shadow" means that the rear derailleur "hides" under the chain stay, i.e. sits closer to the spokes - and this is also useful on a folding bike: when the folded bike is transported in the train, bus or car boot, the sensitive rear derailleur is less at risk this way.
