Shimano Saint is the gravity groupset in the Shimano MTB lineup, developed for ambitious downhill riding and World Cup racing.
When braking bumps and muddy, steep turns push your components to the limit, the Saint groupset delivers. Ice Technologies brakes provide consistent, fade-free stopping power, while the extremely durable drivetrain takes hard landings in stride. The mechanical rear derailleur with Shadow Plus damping effectively prevents chain slap. Low-profile Shimano Saint flat pedals with excellent grip round out the groupset for maximum control.
You'll find individual components and complete brake sets for your downhill bike.
Why Shimano Saint works on your gravity bike
Three features make the difference when speed and terrain leave no room for error.
- Fade-free four-piston power: Ceramic pistons and Ice-Tech cooling maintain a consistent bite point.
- Shadow Plus stability: The switchable friction damper virtually eliminates chain slap.
- Steel-reinforced crank: A thick steel axle and steel pedal thread inserts stand up to massive impacts.
Shimano Saint components at a glance
The right component depends on your riding and frame. A pure downhill setup with a wide bottom bracket calls for a different crank than a freeride build. For brakes, choose complete sets or individual components for targeted upgrades.
Shimano Saint brakes
The extra-stiff BR-M820 brake caliper uses four large ceramic pistons. The post-mount caliper is available individually or as part of a complete Shimano Saint brake set, both with an I-Spec B mount. You'll also find Shimano Saint brake pads for maintenance and replacement.
Shimano Saint drivetrain and shifting
Your frame determines which Saint Hollowtech II crank you need. For standard 68/73 mm bottom bracket shells, choose the FC-M820 with a 50.4 mm chainline. Wider frames with an 83 mm standard call for the FC-M825 with a 57.9 mm chainline. Both cranks use a high-strength steel axle and steel pedal thread inserts. At the rear, the RD-M820-SS short-cage rear derailleur and SL-M820 shifter deliver precise, crisp shifting through all ten gears.
Shimano Saint pedals
Shimano Saint pedals keep you firmly connected to the bike. The ultra-low-profile PD-G8040 flat pedal uses a flush axle design and deeply concave platform that holds your shoe securely in place, while variable pins deliver extreme grip. An integrated carbon-resin bumper helps the pedal deflect impacts when it hits obstacles.
For a secure clipped-in connection, choose the PD-M821. Its proven SPD mechanism sits inside a durable aluminum platform that protects the clip-in mechanism and provides a stable platform even when you're unclipped.
Shimano Saint technologies for gravity riding
The series features technologies Shimano has specifically tuned for gravity riding. Each one is designed to keep you in control when heat and impacts put your components under pressure.
- SERVO WAVE lever action: The lever dynamically changes its mechanical ratio. The pads move rapidly toward the rotor at the start of the stroke, then leverage increases for maximum power with precise modulation. You get minimal free stroke, maximum control and tool-free reach adjustment.
- ICE Technologies Freeza: A three-layer sandwich construction of stainless steel and aluminum dissipates heat extremely quickly. Wide cooling fins exposed to the airflow dramatically reduce system temperature, eliminate brake fade on long descents and help extend pad life.
- SHADOW RD+ rear derailleur technology: The ultra-low-profile design sits close to the frame for protection against rock strikes. A switchable friction damper stabilizes the cage, virtually eliminates chain slap and dropped chains, and keeps the drivetrain quiet. The wide parallelogram link also provides maximum torsional stiffness.
