XLAB was founded in 1993 in Encinitas, California, a triathlon stronghold. The founder, Craig Turner, an aerospace designer with a passion for speed, brought his knowledge of aerodynamics and lightweight construction to cycling after years in the aerospace industry. His goal was to develop bike accessories that would make triathletes faster. The first major milestone: a double rear rack that provided more stability and optimal weight distribution on the bike. Since then, XLAB has focused on advanced hydration systems and bottle cages made of high-quality materials.
XLAB Hydration Systems and Bottle Cages – Technology and Innovation as a Recipe for Success
XLAB designs all its hydration systems and bottle cages with a focus on aerodynamics, adjustability and ease of use. In the following sections, we'll show you how XLAB accessories make a difference in triathlon.
Bottle Cages by XLAB – A Secure Hold in Every Position
The GORILLA bottle cage by XLAB was developed for different mounting positions on the frame, aero handlebars or rear. Depending on the placement, the holding force adjusts so that your bottle is held securely but can still be easily removed. The widened inner profile makes it easier to insert, while the narrow front opening ensures a firm hold. An additional lower holding area provides even more stability – even on rough roads.
The Durable Two-Bottle Rear Wing Carbon Aero
Wing optimizes the airflow between you and your bike, reducing drag. It also offers space for up to two water bottles or other accessories such as a repair kit or a small bag. The fixed mounting ensures maximum stability, while six adjustable positions allow for individual customization.
Torpedo Hydration System – Aerodynamic Efficiency for Maximum Performance
In triathlon, every detail counts – even when it comes to hydration. The Torpedo Hydration System allows for effortless fluid intake without disrupting airflow. Its sophisticated design optimizes aerodynamics and ensures that you maintain your speed. Thanks to its strategic placement between the forearms and the special bottle shape, the system reduces drag by 64.7 percent compared to a standard bottle – a saving that can add up to 10 minutes over the full IRONMAN distance.
- Perfect customization for every race: XLAB hydration systems are specially designed for different racing conditions. Thanks to the modular design of the Torpedo hydration system, all components can be flexibly combined and customized.
- Maximum flexibility and easy handling: Seamless switching between refill and standard bottles allows for quick adjustments during the race. The foldable straw reduces drag and stays flat when you don't need it. The easy-open lid makes refilling easier, while the leak-proof design ensures that liquids stay inside.
- Aerodynamic optimization for more speed: Air channels and the special comb tail design improve the flow behind the bottle and minimize turbulence. The adjustable height allows for optimal positioning of the bottle in line with the forearms to further reduce drag.
- Well-thought-out mounting solutions: The 2-clamp design replaces cable ties and rubber bands and ensures secure and tool-free mounting. XLAB is one of the few manufacturers to offer a horizontal system between the aerobars and the first to integrate a computer mount directly in front of the bottle – for optimal visibility of performance data and even less drag.
XLAB Triathlon Accessories – The Art is in the Details
XLAB develops every product with the utmost precision to balance weight, durability and aerodynamics. Every detail is designed to withstand the demands of triathlon – from material selection to manufacturing. The use of advanced processes and high-quality materials results in durable and high-performance components. Depending on the design, different materials and processes are used to further optimize your performance:
High-tech Materials
XLAB relies on high-strength and lightweight materials from the aerospace industry. These include carbon fiber composites, aluminum alloys, titanium and sandwich panels with a honeycomb core. The latter consist of a lightweight core with a honeycomb structure, which is enclosed by stable outer layers. This way, they offer an optimal weight-strength ratio. In addition, high-quality finishing processes such as anodizing, powder coating and galvanizing ensure a long service life – even under extreme racing conditions.
Secure Mounting Without Compromise
XLAB relies on high-quality mounts and systems that hold securely even under extreme conditions. Instead of corrosion-prone steel, only stainless steel or high-quality galvanized screws with a high specification are used. So that nothing loosens up on the road, you benefit from Nylstop nuts, which sit reliably even in the face of vibrations. Since these nuts are fixed from both sides, they can only be used where a back side is accessible. If this is not possible, a Loctite anti-vibration coating provides additional hold. So you can fully concentrate on your race without worrying about your equipment.
