What is WaveCel?

WaveCel is a compressible cell structure on the inside of the helmet. It works like a crumple zone, absorbing impact energy in a fall and protecting the head from hard impacts.

ES is a compressible cellular material that provides incredibly effective protection against concussions in cycling-type accidents. Here, the material structure reacts in three phases when an impact occurs to absorb the energy before it reaches the head. A special feature is the interception of rotational forces by the WaveCel material in the helmet, so that they are transferred to the skull to a much lesser extent or not at all. Until now, conventional helmets with EPS foam have not been able to sustainably prevent this force from being absorbed at the moment of impact, which significantly increases the risk of concussions.

This material, used exclusively in Bontrager helmets, is the invention of a biomechanical engineer and an orthopedic surgeon who set out to solve the problem of traumatic brain injury in active people. WaveCel is the first ever advanced helmet technology to receive funding from the US National Institutes of Health.
