Find MTB inner tubes at BIKE24

A good inner tube is the foundation of a reliable mountain bike setup, whether you’re cruising flowy trails or picking your way through technical sections. Choosing the right tube affects puncture resistance, weight, and ride feel. Classic butyl tubes remain a durable all-round choice, while modern TPU tubes save significant weight and can offer improved puncture protection at the same time. Valve type also matters. Presta valves are the MTB standard thanks to their slim design and precise pressure control, while Schrader valves can be inflated at any gas station, which can be handy on trips.

At BIKE24, you’ll find MTB inner tubes for all wheel sizes, from 26 inch to 27.5 inch and 29 inch, and for every riding style from cross-country to downhill.

  • Wide selection: From affordable butyl tubes to premium TPU options, there’s a tube for every budget and riding style.
  • Easy to find the right fit: Narrow things down by wheel size, tire width, valve type, or material to find a tube that matches your bike.

Mountain bike inner tubes by wheel size

Choosing the right mountain bike tube depends on your rim diameter and tire width. Modern MTB tubes are elastic enough to cover a range of tire sizes. For example, a 29 inch tube often fits tires from 2.0 to 2.6 inches, roughly 50 to 65 mm in width.

  • 26-inch inner tubes: Inner tubes for 26 inch wheels, with a 559 mm rim diameter, are still widely available and offer proven reliability for everyday use. While 26 inch was once the standard MTB size, it’s now most commonly found on kids’ bikes, youth bikes, and older mountain bikes. If you’re riding a 26 inch MTB, you’ll still find high-quality inner tubes from established brands.
  • 27.5-inch inner tubes: 27.5-inch inner tubes, also known as 650B, are used on wheels with a 584 mm rim diameter. This size is commonly found on enduro bikes, smaller frame sizes, and mullet setups with a 27.5-inch rear wheel. The compact diameter combines agile handling with good rollover and works especially well on technical trails and for a playful riding style.
  • 29-inch inner tubes: Inner tubes for a 622 mm rim diameter work on both 29-inch MTB wheels and 28-inch road or trekking wheels. The key difference is tire width. Trekking and road bikes usually run narrower tires between 1.5 and 2.0 inches, while 29-inch mountain bikes use higher-volume tires starting around 2.0 inches. That’s why many brands offer combined 28/29-inch inner tubes designed to cover a wide range of tire widths, typically from 1.5 to 2.6 inches. Today, 29-inch wheels are the standard in mountain biking and a common choice for cross-country, marathon, trail, and all-mountain bikes. The larger diameter rolls more easily over obstacles, provides better traction, and delivers a stable, confidence-inspiring ride on longer outings.

What to consider before buying MTB inner tubes

Choosing the right mountain bike tire tube comes down to more than just wheel size. How you ride, how much weight you’re willing to save, and how much durability you need all play a role. Lighter tubes make sense for cross-country riding, while tougher options are the better choice for downhill and bike park use.

  • Wheel size and tire width: The tube needs to match your wheel size (26-inch, 27.5-inch, or 29-inch) and your tire width. Typical MTB tires range from 2.0 to 2.6 inches (around 50–65 mm), and most inner tubes are elastic enough to cover this range. Always check the size printed on the tube, for example 29 x 2.0–2.6.
  • Material: Butyl tubes are the proven standard. They’re affordable, durable, and well suited to everyday riding, holding air reliably over longer periods. TPU tubes, made from thermoplastic polyurethane, are much lighter, often reducing weight by 50–70 percent, while offering improved puncture resistance and more efficient rolling. Latex tubes roll exceptionally well but lose air more quickly. TPU and latex options both come at a higher price point.
  • Weight and wall thickness: Lightweight tubes in the 100–150 g range reduce rotating mass and improve acceleration, making them ideal for cross-country and marathon riding. Standard tubes, typically 180–220 g, are more robust and offer better puncture resistance, which suits trail, enduro, and downhill riding. Wall thickness has a direct impact on durability, with thinner tubes more prone to cuts and pinch flats.
  • Valve type: Presta valves, also known as French valves, are the MTB standard. Their slim 6.5 mm diameter fits any rim drilling, allows precise pressure adjustment, and saves weight compared to Schrader valves. Schrader valves are sturdier and can be inflated at gas stations, which can be useful for bikepacking or travel bikes, but they require a larger 8.5 mm rim drilling. A newer option is the Schwalbe Clik Valve, which simplifies inflation by snapping the pump head on and allowing up to 50 percent more airflow.
  • Valve length: Standard 40 mm valves work for most MTB rims. Deeper rim profiles, such as carbon rims, usually require longer valves around 60 mm to make pump attachment easier.
  • Puncture protection: Thick-walled tubes provide better protection against punctures and pinch flats but add weight. TPU tubes manage to combine low weight with high puncture resistance thanks to the material itself. For rough terrain and bike park riding, tougher tubes or TPU models are the better option.
  • Riding style: For cross-country and marathon riding, weight savings matter most, making lightweight tubes the right choice. Trail and all-mountain riders typically get the best balance of weight, price, and puncture protection from standard butyl tubes. Downhill and enduro riding demand maximum durability, which means thick-walled tubes or high-quality TPU options.
