Description of Campagnolo Shamal Ultra C17 Wheelset Clincher - 2017
The Shamal wheelset represents somewhat of a cornerstone in fine performance wheelworks and as such it has been at the forefront of innovation since its inception over 20 years ago. Born as the very first complete wheelset with each component in its build being specifically designed as a complete unit to ensure unparalleled efficiency and performance, the Shamal continued to introduce new technologies that would change the way aluminum performance wheels were produced. So advanced was the Shamal in its early stages that it was found also in World Tour competition often and to this day is still one of the most race ready aluminum wheelsets available.
There is a long list of innovative technologies found its way into the cycling world thanks to this wheelset such as a differentiated rim height, G3™ spoke pattern, the MoMag™ technology, oversized driveside flange, USB™ ceramic bearings, oversize aerodynamic aluminum spokes and RDB™ (Rim Dynamic Balance).
The modern Shamal includes all of the aforementioned technologies and represents years of solid research and development that culminates in the newest version of this prestigious line of wheels, the Campagnolo Shamal Ultra C17. Its new, wider profile meets the C17 standard and is perfect for use with the increasingly popular tire sizes. The new Shamal was studied specifically to increase the compatibility with 25 and 28 mm tires. This new rim/tire interface proves to be more aerodynamic when compared to the same size tires mated to a C15 rim.
The new C17 also allows for a more surefooted grip on the road in addition to increased comfort while increasing rigidity and thus reactivity at the same time thanks to its wider stance and optimized material usage. The Shamal Ultra C17 will continues to use a carbon fiber hub body with extra smooth USB™ bearings to make them as efficient as possible. The hubs for this newly designed wheel will continue to be differentiated between front and rear in order to optimize weight savings while considering structural and performance necessities that change with the individual roles of the two wheels. The 16 aerodynamic anodized aluminum spokes on the front wheel are laced radially while the 21 spokes of the rear wheel are grouped in the Mega-G3™ pattern, famous not only for its fantastic performance but also for its innovative design.
A new adjusting lock ring with microsetting has trickled down to this new C17 version from the Bora family, further highlighting the Shamal’s claim and status as a top tier race wheel. The new advanced Shamal Ultra C17 wheels represent the same fantastic performance that has made them some of the go to aluminum race wheels for the better part of two decades while adding more versatility and performance.
Campagnolo has developed an assembly architecture which, compared with a traditional wheel, makes it possible to improve energy transfer, reduce the stress on the spokes on the right and increase transverse rigidity. This is achieved because in G3™ geometry the right-hand side of the rear wheel is fitted with twice as many spokes as the left. The results are a better transfer of the driving torque, better lateral rigidity and a reduction of the stress in the rear wheel spokes. In addition the wheel's responsiveness becomes increased and even at a higher system weight there are no more wheel vibrations. Thanks to the oversize flange G3™ becomes Mega-G3™. This solution allows the increase of the torsional stiffness values even more, to the benefit of the overall responsiveness of the wheel.
RDB™ - Rim Dynamic Balance
The concept is simple and elegant: balance the weight of the gasket, with an item of similar weight placed on the exact opposite side. For top models, this is obtained by a special operation on the section of the rim opposite the rim joint.
USB™ - Ultra Smooth Bearings
Campagnolo's hubs with USB™ ceramic bearings further enhance not only the wheels' smoothness, but reduce also the weight and the need for maintenance. Perfectly smooth surfaces make a lower friction possible and reduce the loss of power. So all your power will be transferred onto the road. Developed at Campy Tech Lab™, comparative tests have shown that USB™ bearings are 50% smoother than standard bearings.
MoMag™ - Mounting Magnet
With the help of the patented "Mounting Magnet" the nipples, once inserted inside the rim via the valve hole, are "guided" to the point of connection with the spoke. This simple but ingenious system makes it possible to have a wheel without holes on the upper bridge, but with spokes tensioned by traditional nipples. No holes on the rim means that the rim is uniform at every point, free from stress points or zones of weakness and for the clincher profiles no rim tape is required to the benefit of weight reduction.
