The 5th generation Mutant is a reliable, intelligently equipped climbing backpack for year-round ascents. It's a backpack for year-round use in the mountains when carrying big loads or participating in mountain expeditions. It is super light, flexible, minimizable and adapts to the season: You can count on this durable climbing partner. If you're climbing in cold weather, you'll appreciate the snow-repellent back panel, side ski holders, and dual ToolLock™ system for quick and secure attachment of your ice tools. The main compartment of the Mutant 52 is accessed via a removable lid. So you can pack the pack really full or remove the lid completely for more headroom or less weight. The integrated FlapJacket™ closes the backpack weatherproof and keeps your gear very well fixed. The lid compartment features a quick-use mesh helmet attachment. The removable and rear-folding hip straps with integrated gear loops can be used in either minimal configuration or as gear carriers. For fast climbs with low weight, weight can be saved by removing the back panel, as well as removing the hip belt and lid.

ToolLock™ is a feature on Osprey's climbing packs: it consists of a lightweight, durable aluminum rod designed to fit through the hole in the head of a modern axe. This allows mountaineering tools to be quickly, easily and securely attached to and removed from the pack, even when wearing gloves.
