Grip in corners, confidence over roots and rocks, and efficient power transfer all start with the right tires. The casing, rubber compound, width and tread pattern shape how your bike behaves on the trail. At BIKE24, you’ll find mountain bike tires for every terrain: fast-rolling XC tires for marathon rides, grippy trail tires for technical singletrack, robust enduro tires for demanding descents, and aggressive DH tires for maximum grip in the bike park. We stock mtb tires from Schwalbe, Maxxis, Continental and Vittoria in all common sizes from 24 to 29 inches – ready to match your setup and terrain.

Why good MTB tires make a difference on the trail

Wet roots, loose gravel in corners or steep climbs – the right mtb tires give you the grip, speed and reliability you need on demanding trails.

  • More control: Optimized tread patterns improve grip and deliver confident handling from the first ride.
  • More speed: Lower rolling resistance helps you maintain speed and climb more efficiently.
  • Fewer flats: Reinforced casings, sidewall protection and tubeless setups reduce the risk of punctures on rough terrain.

Mountain bike tire sizes: 29 to 24 inches

Rolling through rock gardens, carving loose corners or threading tight singletrack – tire size changes how your bike feels on the trail. Larger 29-inch mountain bike tires deliver stability and momentum in technical terrain. Smaller 27.5-inch tires feel quicker and more agile on tight trails – and a mullet setup lets you combine both characteristics. Once you’ve chosen the size, tread pattern, casing and rubber compound fine-tune the tire to your riding style.

MTB tires 29 inch

29-inch mtb tires dominate modern cross-country, trail and enduro riding – and for good reason. The larger diameter rolls smoothly over roots and rocks, giving you more stability at speed and noticeably more traction on loose terrain. Depending on your riding style, you can choose between lightweight race casings for maximum efficiency or robust gravity versions with multi-layer construction for maximum puncture protection.

MTB tires 27.5 inch

If you’re after an agile, playful ride feel – especially for enduro and downhill – 27.5-inch tires are a great choice. The smaller diameter accelerates quickly and responds instantly to direction changes, which helps in tight corners, bike park lines and technical maneuvers. They’re also popular as the rear tire in mullet setups (29" front / 27.5" rear), giving you more freedom of movement and extra control on descents.

MTB tires 26 inch

Once the MTB standard, 26-inch tires have become a more specialized option today. You’ll mostly find them on dirt jump bikes, pump track bikes and older mountain bikes. Their compact size delivers direct handling and quick power transfer – ideal for tight lines, jumps and technical tricks. The 26-inch format also remains common on youth mountain bikes with versatile tread patterns for a wide range of terrain.

MTB tires up to 24 inches

This tire size is mainly used on performance-oriented kids’ and youth mountain bikes. High-quality youth MTB tires feature well-developed tread patterns, modern rubber compounds and, in some cases, tubeless-ready casings. They’re designed for lower system weights while still delivering low rolling resistance and reliable puncture protection on trails and in the bike park. You’ll also occasionally find 24-inch tires on compact dirt or street bikes.

Choosing the right MTB tires

Your MTB tire setup starts with what you want from the trail: maximum grip on descents, the lowest rolling resistance on climbs or the best balance between the two. Tire size, width, casing construction and rubber compound all influence how your bike performs off-road. Use our filters to quickly find the models that match your riding style and terrain.

Which MTB tires do I need for my riding style?

Every riding style and terrain calls for a different combination of tread, casing and compound. For XC and marathon riding, choose low-profile knobs, lightweight race casings and fast-rolling compounds for hard ground. Trail and all-mountain setups balance grip and efficiency with medium-height knobs and reinforced all-round casings. For enduro riding, aggressive tread patterns, robust casings and softer front compounds deliver maximum control on demanding descents. Downhill tires focus on ultimate grip and stability with multi-layer DH casings and very soft compounds – weight plays a secondary role here.

How wide should my MTB tires be?

The right tire width depends on your riding style, terrain and rim width. Cross-country bikes usually run 2.2" to 2.35" MTB tires for low weight and fast rolling. Trail and all-mountain riders often choose 2.35" to 2.5" tires for a balanced mix of grip, comfort and control. For enduro and downhill riding, 2.4" to 2.6" MTB tires deliver maximum traction and stability on rough terrain. Wider tires allow lower tire pressure, which improves grip and comfort on technical trails. Narrower tires roll faster and keep the bike feeling more agile on smoother terrain. Your rim’s internal width also matters - wider rims support wider MTB bike tires and help stabilize the tire profile in corners.

Which tread pattern is right for my MTB bike tires?

The tread pattern determines how your MTB tires grip, roll and clear mud. Low-profile tread rolls fast and works best on hardpack and dry trails. Medium-height knobs offer a balanced mix of rolling efficiency and traction for typical trail riding. Aggressive tread with tall, widely spaced knobs delivers maximum grip on loose terrain, mud and steep descents. Many riders also combine different tires front and rear. A more aggressive front tire improves cornering grip and control, while a faster-rolling rear tire keeps acceleration and climbing efficient.

Which casing is right for MTB tires?

The casing determines how durable your MTB tires are and how well they handle impacts and low tire pressures. Lightweight casings keep weight low and roll fast - ideal for cross-country and marathon riding. Reinforced trail casings offer a good balance of protection, grip and efficiency for everyday trail riding. Enduro and downhill casings add extra layers and stronger sidewalls to prevent punctures and stabilize the tire on rough terrain. If you ride rocky trails, bike parks or technical descents, a more robust casing helps protect against cuts and pinch flats. Lighter casings work best on smoother terrain where efficiency and low weight matter most.

Tubeless MTB tires – is it worth upgrading?

Tubeless MTB tires are now the standard in mountain biking - and for good reason. Without an inner tube, you can run lower tire pressures for more grip, comfort and puncture protection on loose terrain. Pinch flats (snakebites) are virtually eliminated, and sealant automatically closes small punctures while you ride. Rolling resistance also improves because without a tube, the tire flexes less inside the casing. To convert your setup, you’ll need tubeless-ready tires and rims, along with tubeless valves, rim tape and sealant. The sealant should be refreshed roughly every six months.

Our tubeless tire installation guide shows you step by step how to make the switch.

Do I need special tires for an e-mountain bike?

E-mountain bikes place greater loads on the tires due to their higher system weight and additional motor torque - especially at the rear wheel. Braking forces are also higher. That’s why e-MTB tires often use reinforced casings, increased puncture protection and rubber compounds that balance strong grip with high wear resistance. When buying tires, look for the E25 marking for pedelecs up to 25 km/h, or ECE-R75 certification for S-pedelecs up to 45 km/h. For an e-mountain bike up to 25 km/h, a specific MTB tire is not legally required. However, tires with reinforced casings usually offer noticeably better durability and safety.
