Mountain Equipment – Gear for the most inhospitable places on the planet

Since Mountain Equipment began in 1961, they have been making gear for the most inhospitable places on the planet. It’s not our job to tell people why they go to the wild places and mountains. It’s our job to make the very best gear in the world.

In 1961, thirteen of the fourteen 8000m peaks had been climbed, all high rock faces in the Alps conquered and both poles reached. Mankind was looking for new destinations and untouched peaks. Pete Hutchinson, the founder of Mountain Equipment, recognized very early that extreme cold and thin air are a big challenge for mountaineering expeditions. The equipment had to be very warm and lightweight at the same time. In the company headquarters, a barn near Manchester, he developed lightweight, small packable yet very warm down overalls, down jackets and the first sleeping bags. Furthermore, Mountain Equipment was one of the first companies to use GORE-Tex®, fleece and softshell.

The company has always comprised a small, passionate team. The sleeping bag designers and product developers are experts for high-tech materials, well thought-out constructions and above all for many clever detail solutions, which make the decisive difference for the use of the products.
What makes a distinction between the proven and award-winning Mountain Equipment sleeping bags and others is not obvious at first glance. Its success cannot be reduced to individual factors: Many elements are convincing in their entirety. From cover materials, down filling and construction to threads and zips: every detail is precisely processed and optimised.

Sleep better with an easy conscience

There is one aspect they never lose sight of: social responsibility. Mountain Equipment is a member of the independent Fair Wear Foundation, which makes a worldwide effort for fair working conditions. In the summer of 2016 they were one of only a few brands that achieved the "Leader Status".

The high quality standards require the best down and the fulfilment of very high ethical standards. Environmental protection and animal welfare have top priority. In 2009, as the first outdoor brand, Mountain Equipment established the Down Codex®. After a long-term process, they are now in the fortunate position of being able to certify all down products with this high standard. This guarantees, among other things, keeping animals in a near natural environment that excludes force-feeding and live plucking.

No time to rest

Success, know-how and many tours they still want to make themselves, spur on the employees of Mountain Equipment to develop their products further every day. Besides down and synthetic fibre sleeping bags, down jackets, hard shells, soft shell jackets, climbing trousers, fleece clothing and performance shirts, backpacks for alpine tours are now also part of the collection. The Tupilak backpack is exactly what you would expect from an alpine backpack. More products for climbing, ski mountaineering and mountaineering are in the pipeline! In addition, there are now really warm and comfortable sleeping mats. They make you sleep almost as comfortably as in your own bed!
