It’s not our job to tell people why they go to the wild places and mountains. It’s our job to make the very best gear in the world.

In 1961, thirteen of the fourteen 8000m peaks had been climbed, all high rock faces in the Alps conquered and both poles reached. Mankind was looking for new destinations and untouched peaks. Pete Hutchinson, the founder of Mountain Equipment, recognized very early that extreme cold and thin air are a big challenge for mountaineering expeditions. In a barn near Manchester he developed light, small packable but very warm down overalls, down jackets and the first sleeping bags. Today, the brand, which was among the first to use GORE-Tex®, fleece and softshell, is one of the experts for reliable equipment in the world's most inhospitable regions.

Sleep better with an easy conscience

There is one aspect they never lose sight of: social responsibility. Mountain Equipment is a member of the independent Fair Wear Foundation, which makes a worldwide effort for fair working conditions. In summer 2016, they were also one of the few brands to be awarded "Leader Status", when 93 percent of all their producers were already subject to FWF monitoring. Kees Gootjes, Brand Manager of the Fair Wear Foundation, certified Mountain Equipment's "high commitment to implementing social standards and fair purchasing conditions in the textile supply chain".

Environmental protection and animal welfare have top priority. In 2009, as the first outdoor brand, Mountain Equipment established the Down Codex®. After a long-term process, they are now in the fortunate position of being able to certify all down products with this high standard. This guarantees, among other things, keeping animals in a near natural environment that excludes force-feeding and live plucking.

The DOWN CYCLE™ project is the next logical step for Mountain Equipment. The jackets and sleeping bags of this series are made of 100% recycled down and 100% recycled inner and outer material. And the ultimate goal is to establish a completely self-sufficient recycling system, where every used Mountain Equipment down product is sustainably recycled and used to manufacture new ones. So you can leave a mark without leaving a huge CO2 footprint.

No time to rest

Success, know-how and many tours they still want to make themselves, spurs on the employees of Mountain Equipment to develop their products further every day. Besides down and synthetic fibre sleeping bags, down jackets, hard shells, soft shell jackets, climbing trousers, fleece clothing and performance shirts, backpacks are also part of the collection. Plus, there are really warm and comfortable sleeping mats. They make you sleep almost as comfortably as in your own bed!
