Chain grease on your pants, squeaking metal links or jerky gears - if you own a bike with a classic derailleur system, you know that pedaling doesn't always go smoothly - or in this case, the pedals. It is precisely experiences like this that have given the belt drive on electric bikes an ever-growing fan base in recent years. This is because, in contrast to the classic chain drive, the belt drive on an electric bike offers a quiet and smooth riding experience - and is also virtually maintenance-free.
As the name suggests, the heart of a belt drive for bicycles is not a metal chain, but a strap. This consists of a rubber compound reinforced with carbon fibers. The belt has a different structure to a chain: while the teeth of the sprockets on a chain drive engage in the openings in the chain, the teeth on a belt drive sit on the strap itself and engage in the pulleys provided for this purpose. A lube is not necessary here, making the strap the much cleaner drive variant for this reason alone. But this is not the only advantage of the strap, as the following overview shows.
E-Bikes With Belt Drive – The Advantages and Disadvantages at a Glance
The advantages and disadvantages of electric bikes with a belt drive at a glance:
Advantages
- Low maintenance: In contrast to a chain, a belt drive requires hardly any maintenance and does not need to be oiled.
- Longevity: Belt drives are very robust and generally last longer than chains. This is due to the lower friction, as there are no chain links.
- Quiet: Belt drives produce less noise than chains and provide a smoother ride.
- Clean: As no chain grease is required, belt drives ensure that clothing and hands stay clean.
- Low resistance: Unlike a chain, which expands over time, a belt drive on a bike remains constantly efficient.
Disadvantages
- Initial costs: an electric bike with a belt drive, motor and rechargable battery is generally more expensive to purchase than an electric bike with a chain drive.
- Incompatibility: belt drives require special frames and are not compatible with all types of bike.
- Complex replacement: if a belt drive needs to be replaced, this can be more complicated than with a chain.
- Choice of gears: Belt drives are only available on electric bikes with hub gears, which can limit your choices.
